With the Costa del Folk in Mallorca barely finished we are delighted that three acts joining us for our return to Portugal October 2-7th 2016 have recently won awards at the Radio Two Folk Awards.
For the second year running, The Young’uns were named BEST GROUP in the BBC’s annual Folk Awards, held this week at the Royal Albert Hall, and will be joining us for their second appearance at the Costa del Folk.
The HORIZON AWARD was won by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sam Kelly, who’ll be appearing in Portugal with two groups, the Sam Kelly Trio and with Changing Room, the exciting new five-piece folk collaboration with singer/songwriter Tanya Brittain.
The GOOD TRADITION AWARD at the Folk Awards went to acclaimed Scottish fiddle player, John McCusker, who will also be appearing in two formats in Portugal: with the widely acclaimed trio McGoldrick, McCusker and Doyle and as accompanist for his wife Heidi Talbot.
Also on the Costa del Folk line-up for Portugal are the BEST DUO winners from the 2014 Folk Awards, Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, one of this year’s four nominees in the same category.
Recent winners also appearing in Portugal include Show of Hands, Tim Edey and Fisherman’s Friends.
“We’re delighted that so many of the acts coming to our 5th Costa del Folk have been acknowledged at the best in the country,” said Programme Director, Geoff Sargieson.
“Many more of our acts have been among the nominees and winners in previous years and this underlines our aim of providing the very best in folk music at our unique and increasingly popular event.”
