Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar have risen through the ranks of the UK folk scene in double quick time. They met and formed a musical partnership while still at school and within little more than a year had won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award for 2013. A year later they picked up the BBC’s Horizon Award for 2014 having been judged UK’s best emerging folk performers.
Both Greg and Ciaran are from musical families and were regulars at folk festivals, clubs and sessions from an early age. Ciaran in fact won the under-12 section of the All-Ireland fiddle championships at the age of 11.
They’re both talented multi-instrumentalists with Greg playing guitar, bouzouki and English concertina, as well as singing, while Ciaran (who also sings) plays fiddle, guitar and bouzouki.
Their repertoire comes from the folk tradition, contemporary writing and themselves; a range of material which combined with their vocal and instrumental prowess continues to belie their youth.
